A big rig truck hauling 40,000 pounds of dog food overturned in Castaic Wednesday morning, spilling some of the food and sparking a small spot fire, officials said.
The incident was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on The Old Road and Lake Hughes Road after the big rig crashed over the side of the 5 Freeway, said Officer Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office.
“The driver made an unsafe turning maneuver and went over a little embankment,” Greengard said.
After colliding through a chain-link fence, the big rig traveled down a small embankment, landing on The Old Road, according to Greengard.
Some of the dog food in the trailer of the big rig spilled onto the road, according to CHP officials.
Firefighters responded to the crash reporting a 100-by-50-foot spot fire, according to Marvin Lim, with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“One engine was able to handle,” Lim said.
Los Angeles County Public Works was requested to the scene to clean up oil which was leaking from the big rig, according to Lim.
The northbound lanes of The Old Road were closed until about 4 a.m. Wednesday as crews cleared the wreckage, according to the CHP.
